Courtship Ritualsįinally, the courtship behavior begins. One partnering could last for a mating season, days, weeks, or months. They are seen to partner with different individuals at times. Otherwise, rhinoceroses are not known for defending harems of cows. The male rhinos come to know this through the scent coming from their contemporaries. They do this only for the receptive cows in their territory. The bulls would fight other competitors off. It is a kind of intelligent behavior seen among them. Because with the mother’s presence, the daughter doesn’t ovulate and hence gets no males attracted toward them. But female rhino does this only when her mom is not around. Ovulation by Female Rhinoįemale rhinoceroses ovulate once every month and are receptive to young coves for one or two days. It is sort of a pre courtship behavior among them. They let others know that they claim a specific land and any reproductive cows within it. Sexually matured bulls start marking their land by spraying uring and feces around. The whole copulation starts from the male rhinos marking their territories and the females ovulating in that territory. Still, sometimes the wounds might be fatal for the couple and cause them harm. The whole process may seem dangerous to us, but the animals are built to sustain the damage. The intercourse follows different courtship behaviors, with the female mounting by the male from the back. But male rhinos aren’t ready for mating until they are at least 7 years old. How Do Rhinos Mateįemale rhinos reach sexual maturity at the age of 3 years. However, it is not easy for an adult to be accepted as a worthy mate to their contemporaries. Rhino males and females may exhibit different courtship toward one another before mating. They give birth to a single calf after this period. But in captivity, it can extend to 18 months. Rhinos’ pregnancy lasts around 15 to 16 months in the wild. Rhinoceroses are the second largest mammals on land, so it must take long for the calves to develop in the womb.
